It is very hard to find anyone who does not like potatoes. No doubt it is called the king of vegetables.

Are Potatoes Bad for Weight Loss??

If You generally follow a healthy diet and stay away from consumption of Junk Foods, consuming potatoes may not lead to weight gain.

Instead, there are scientific studies showing the effect of potato consumption on weight loss.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition, looked at two groups of people and observed the weight loss patterns in both. Both the groups followed a low calorie-diet; while one group continued consuming potatoes, the other group banished them from their diets. The researchers observed that the consumption of potatoes did not have any effect on weight loss in the group.

According to me, YES you can consume if you are on your weight loss journey.

Reasons Why you should be having it

1. Prevents Overeating - Potato is high in fiber as well as resistant starch which keeps you full for longer and thereby prevents overeating. They are rich in protease inhibitor which gives a feeling of satiety through the release of the hormone cholecystokinin.

2. Boosts your Metabolism-

Potatoes are rich in antioxidants called polyphenols which boost your metabolism by breaking down sugar at a higher rate.

3. They are loaded with nutrients- They are high in potassium which helps in water retention. Magnesium, Vitamin B, and C fight inflammation, calm nerves, and lower blood pressure.

You should include them in your daily diet unless you are making these mistakes.

1. Preparation method- Aloo paratha, Tikki, or French fries brings water into our mouth. Frying will increase the calorie amount and thereby hinders weight loss. Avoid frying, use baking, roasting, and boiling.

2. Portion size – This is the most important aspect of every food. Quantity in which you are eating makes a healthier option unhealthy. Watch out for the portion or quantity. If you are eating potatoes daily and all the meals you should check on it.

3. Combination- Are eating other carbohydrate-rich foods?? If you eat roti or rice with aloo vegetable and fried aloo chips becomes carbohydrate loaded meal. How about you want to eat potato, add boiled form along with boiled chickpeas, and add veggies like cucumber, tomato, and onion along with coriander. This makes it a perfect meal for breakfast or lunch/dinner. Nutritionally balanced has carbs, protein, and fiber with quantity in control and satisfying in terms of fullness.

So, the truth is YES you can include it if eaten in the right way.
