Read it to know why you should not be going on a GM diet to lose weight.

GM diet is also known as General Motor Diet is again a fad diet where the strict diet plan must be followed for 7 days long, there are eating rules for each day. And after that guess what gain back all the weight which you have lost by punishing hard your body. Do you think it is a Good Deal?

There are many side effects of this diet which I am mentioning it down so, keep reading.


1. Not sustainable – The biggest drawback of this short diet is that it is not sustainable. It is based on a restrictive eating pattern with lots of NO NO excluding certain food groups. Neither it focusses on a balanced eating pattern. That s the reason can not help in long term sustainable weight loss.

2. GM Diet does not keep into consideration the medical conditions of the person which can be very dangerous for health.

3. Most of the people who follows this diet complain of severe headache, low energy, lack of concentration and weakness, Mood swings, and irritability. This happens because of sudden calorie cut down and abrupt change in the eating pattern to which your body is not used to.

4. Low-calorie diet causes a lowering of metabolic rate which makes it difficult to maintain weight in the future, also ends up gaining weight which you lose in 7 days.

5. No Fat loss on GM diet - you are basically starving yourself and removing entire food groups on specific days from your diet. All the weight you lose will be essentially muscle loss, not fat. And since it’s all muscle loss, your metabolism will slow down even more. So, once you start eating normally, you will put on all the weight you lost in that week, plus some more.

6. As the GM diet is a quick remedy to lose weight, it is not possible and advisable to follow this type of diet in the long run as it is against the guidelines of a balanced diet. Moreover, it is not scientifically backed up and you may be nutritionally deficient.

7. GM diet does not take into consideration change in lifestyle and eating habits which boomerangs the weight you lose. Moreover, you are not making any changes in your lifestyle so it will backfire the weight you might have lost.

8. Nutrient Deprivation- This diet is deficient in all essential nutrients like vitamin B 12, calcium, and Iron.

9. Not as easy as it looks- At first you see the diet. You go all “oh I can do this, won’t be so hard”. WRONG. The first day you will be extremely motivated and so will not feel the hunger. Because you are almost 100% sure that today is the day you have started your journey to lose weight.

10. Can’t change a single meal plan- if you think you can consume food with the same amount of calories, as the meal plan for the day. WRONG.

11. The diet involves calorie reduction- When the body is deprived of calories, it goes into starvation mode and learns to conserve energy. So, when regular eating is resumed, the body tends to use less energy and store more, resulting in fat and weight gain.

12. The diet does not focus on lifestyle changes and neither encourages regular exercise and workout.

13. Hair loss- The strength of your hair depends on nutrients like folate, iron, and protein, which are missing in the GM diet. The diet does include fiber but lacks in key vitamins and minerals. Therefore, people with slight hair fall may experience losing hair in bunches after following this program.

Biggest drawback

Even after following the diet strictly for 7 days, you will gain back the lost weight as soon as you resume eating the normal foods. The restrictive nature of the diet makes one crave too much, which leads to uncontrolled eating once the diet is over.

The best possible way to sustain weight loss is to practice mindful eating, choose a well-balanced diet, and be physically active. So, stop running after these fad diets which keep coming and going. What stays is Eating the right nutrition and having the right lifestyle and mindset.

I completely agree with above information. I tried it 3 times in last 3 years but all in vain. Biggest drawback what i felt is that its not sustainable!!
