The Art of Drinking Water

There is an art of eating and there is an art of drinking water. Each and every cell of our body requires water for metabolic activities, and to support our immune function and cellular functions.

Media these days are forcing to drink more and more litres, promoting trending water bottles, sippers etc. The way we drink water is very important.

Let’s learn that


How to drink water?

  1. Always drink sip by sip, take water in your mouth and squish and then drink. This helps the alkaline enzymes from your saliva get mixed well with water, and when these enzymes get along with water improves your digestion. When you chuck down the water fast. Most of it gets flushed out from your system without getting absorbed from your cells. When you sip water get absorbed properly and you will see your body requires less water or will not feel thirsty very soon.

  2. Drink when thirsty – Listen to cues your body is giving you day in and out. Chapped and dry lips, yellow colour of your urine, constipation and low energy are a few signs you are dehydrated. Drink when your body is asking for it.


When to drink?

  1. Half an hour before and after meals – Giving this much gap will enhance your digestion. Drinking half an hour before meals will maintain the digestive fire which digests your food well and avoid constipation, gastric, acidity or bloating. In the same way, give a gap of half an hour after meals which completes the digestive process and will not dilute the environment.


If you have a habit of drinking with meals you need to work on it, till that time just sip a few sips in between.


  1. During and pre and post-workout – Hydration plays an important role in workouts as it will avoid pain, aches and muscle cramps. Taking half a litre of water with lemon squeezed in it will keep u hydrated and motivated during workouts. It will also balance the electrolytes

  2. Empty Stomach – You should drink water preferably lukewarm the moment you get up. This helps wake up your body systems and also helps in the detoxification efficiently.

  3. When we get busy with our work we forget to drink and then at a stretch we drink a lot of water which is wrong. Drink water throughout the day remember sip by sip.

  4. Avoid drinking as the sunsets. Having a lot of water in the evening disrupts your sleep because you will have to visit the bathroom many times.


How much you should drink?


The amount of water intake is very individualized. It depends on many factors like the climatic conditions you are living in. In a hot climate, you require more. If you are physically more active, your body requires more.


How your lifestyle affects you? If your diet is full of fruits and veggies your body requires less water. WHY??? Your body is able to absorb water from these foods more efficiently.


Are you drinking more Tea and coffee ?? These foods work as diuretics and drain lots of water from your body. If you drink tea or coffee more, your body needs more water. For every cup of tea or coffee, you should drink two glasses of water.


These factors affect your water intake. But on average, you should drink 8 to 12 glasses of water if you are leading a healthy lifestyle.


Track your water intake we think we are drinking enough but we forget. So, when you track you also get to know how much are you drinking is it enough or not? Then only you will be able to keep a goal for yourself.


Fill up bottles in the morning to keep track.



In this section, I want to talk about the spiritual aspect of drinking water which is very interesting.


A Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto found out that our thoughts, emotions and feelings affect the molecular structure of water.


He said water is a liquid computer and can store an immense amount of memory. It stores all your emotions and feelings with which you are drinking.


Imagine our body is 60 to 70 % water, how much power does water have on our bodies. If we consciously take care of how we are drinking we can avoid most of the physical / lifestyle diseases.


It's simple just practice an ancient way of storing water in Matka or copper vessels and do some puja daily. This way it will become more energetic with all good feelings. You can drink from this the whole day.
